What is the San Silvestre?

The San Silvestre is Spain's New Year's Eve race, named after the saint whose feast day is 31 December. The best known is the San Silvestre Vallecana in the city of Madrid, but many villages in the sierra hold their own, almost always on the 31st itself or in the days before.

They're festive races, and plenty of runners turn up in fancy dress. In December the sierra is cold first thing, so bring a layer for before the start and after the finish.

Before New Year's Eve there are Christmas races too, several of them for charity.
